Vivid Vision Alternatives: How It Works, Availability, Evidence and Other Options
Updated
Written by the Optics Trainer team from published research, with every source linked below. Not yet reviewed by a clinician.
Vivid Vision is a virtual reality vision training program that eye care providers use for lazy eye (amblyopia), eye turns (strabismus), convergence insufficiency and poor depth perception. People search for a Vivid Vision alternative for a few reasons: it is not currently offered in the US, it needs a provider, and the price is not published. This guide covers what Vivid Vision is, how to get it, what the FDA records show, what the research found, how it compares with Luminopia, and other options, including where Optics Trainer does and does not fit.
What is Vivid Vision?
Vivid Vision is made by Vivid Vision, Inc., a company based in San Francisco with an office in Tokyo. Its software runs on VR headsets and uses games to train the two eyes to work together. Because a headset shows each eye its own image, the games can give each eye a different task.
A real strength is that an eye care provider sets up and adjusts the program, so patients are not choosing exercises on their own. The company describes two versions. Vivid Vision Clinical is used in the office and, the company says, covers more conditions. Vivid Vision Home is set up by a provider for practice at home. Many providers start in the office and add Home sessions later. The company also makes a separate VR visual field test.
How to get Vivid Vision Home, and is it available in the US?
You cannot buy Vivid Vision Home directly. The company says it is available only from an eye care provider, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist. You get evaluated, receive a prescription, and get an activation code to set up your account. You supply a compatible headset.
US availability is limited. In a January 2022 post, Vivid Vision said it had paused sales of its software in the United States to adjust to new regulatory requirements. When we checked on October 20, 2026, its provider page and clinic page both said Vivid Vision is not currently available in the US. Outside the US, the company says its products carry the European CE mark. Ask the company what is offered where you live.
Vivid Vision cost and supported headsets
Vivid Vision does not publish a price. Its FAQ says cost depends on where you live, the provider, how severe the condition is and the training plan, and it tells patients to ask their doctor for an exact price. Check current pricing with the company or your provider.
As of October 20, 2026, Vivid Vision's hardware page listed these headsets for Home use:
- All-in-one headsets (recommended): Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S
- PC headsets: Oculus Rift S, Oculus Rift CV1, HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro and Valve Index, which need a VR-ready Windows PC
Is Vivid Vision FDA approved?
We found no FDA clearance or approval for Vivid Vision in the FDA's 510(k) and De Novo databases when we searched on October 20, 2026. Its FAQ calls it "a class I medical device that is registered with the US FDA and bears the CE mark."
Registered is not the same as cleared. The FDA's registration database lists Vivid Vision under device types such as a binocular vision training device and a haploscope. The FDA classifies both as Class I and exempt from 510(k) review, so a company can list them without FDA reviewing data on how well they work.
For comparison, Luminopia went through FDA review. The FDA granted it through the De Novo pathway in October 2021 and cleared an update in April 2025.
Does Vivid Vision work? What the research shows
Vivid Vision has more published research than many VR training products. The main training studies on its publications list:
- A 2024 randomized trial from Cairo University compared Vivid Vision with patching in 86 people aged 6 to 37 with amblyopia. After 10 weeks, the weaker eye improved by about 0.9 lines with Vivid Vision and 1.4 lines with patching. The difference was not statistically significant. No company authors were listed.
- A 2017 pilot study gave 17 adults with amblyopia eight 40-minute sessions of a Vivid Vision game. Vision and depth perception improved, but there was no comparison group. The authors reported no competing interests.
- A 2020 review of records from 84 adults who did VR dichoptic training found a small average gain in vision, with no comparison group.
- A 2026 study of home VR training for depth perception in adults enrolled 16 people, and 11 finished. Most improved in depth perception, but there was no randomized comparison group. One author works for Vivid Vision and has a financial interest in it.
Vivid Vision vs. Luminopia
Both use VR headsets that show each eye a different image, but they differ:
- What you do: Vivid Vision uses active games. Luminopia uses TV shows the child watches for 1 hour a day, 6 days a week.
- Who it is for: Vivid Vision's site says providers have used it with children as young as 5 and with adults. Luminopia is cleared for children aged 4 to under 13 with certain types of amblyopia.
- FDA status: Luminopia is FDA authorized. We found no FDA clearance for Vivid Vision.
- Main trial: Luminopia's 2022 trial of 105 children aged 4 to 7 compared it with glasses alone, and several authors worked for the company. Vivid Vision's 2024 trial compared it with patching.
- Headset: Luminopia ships a headset. With Vivid Vision Home, you supply a supported headset.
| Program | How you get it | Hardware | FDA status | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vivid Vision | Through an eye care provider; not currently available in the US | Meta Quest 2, 3 or 3S, or a PC headset you supply | Registered Class I device; we found no FDA clearance | Not published |
| Luminopia | Prescription for children 4 to under 13 | Headset provided | De Novo granted 2021; cleared for wider ages 2025 | Not published; billed monthly through a partner pharmacy |
Other options, and where Optics Trainer fits
The two products may soon be compared directly. A trial run by the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) is testing Luminopia, Vivid Vision and glasses alone in children aged 8 to 12 with amblyopia. As of its February 2026 registry update, it was recruiting, with main results expected after mid-2027.
For children with amblyopia, glasses, patching and atropine eye drops have the longest track record, and Luminopia and CureSight are FDA-cleared prescription options. For convergence insufficiency, office therapy with home practice is the best-studied approach. Some providers also dispense HTS2, a web-based home eye exercise program from HTS that runs on tablets and computers. HTS says HTS2 does not treat or diagnose any condition. An earlier version of HTS software was the home computer program in the Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial, where it did no better than placebo on symptoms.
Optics Trainer is not a replacement for Vivid Vision or any program your clinician prescribes. It is a set of game-based vision and brain training apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, web browsers and Meta Quest, with binocular games where each eye gets its own target while both eyes stay open, plus eye teaming, convergence and divergence, depth and visual reaction games. It does not need a prescription, and it is not a diagnosis or a treatment. It was not tested in the studies above.
Optics Trainer is not a substitute for professional diagnosis or prescribed care. Consult your eye care professional for guidance about your specific condition. If your clinician agrees that home practice fits your plan, you can try the apps free for 7 days. After that, mobile and web access is $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year, and VR access is $19.99 a month or $199 a year.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vivid Vision FDA approved?
We found no FDA clearance or approval for Vivid Vision in the FDA's device databases. The company says it is a Class I device registered with the FDA. Registration does not mean the FDA reviewed whether it works.
How much does Vivid Vision Home cost?
Vivid Vision does not publish a price. Its FAQ says cost varies by location, provider, condition and training plan, and to ask your doctor. Check current pricing with the company or your provider.
Can I get Vivid Vision without a doctor?
No. Vivid Vision Home is available only through an eye care provider, who evaluates you and gives you an activation code. You supply a compatible VR headset.
Is Vivid Vision available in the US?
As of October 20, 2026, Vivid Vision's website said it is not currently available in the US. The company paused US sales in January 2022 to adjust to new regulatory requirements. Contact the company to confirm current availability.
Does Vivid Vision work for adults with lazy eye?
Small studies in adults reported gains in vision and depth perception, but most had no comparison group. A 2024 randomized trial that included adults found no significant difference from patching. Talk with an eye care professional about realistic goals.
Is Optics Trainer an alternative to Vivid Vision?
Not as a prescribed program. Vivid Vision is set up and supervised by an eye care provider. Optics Trainer is a non-prescription app for practicing visual skills on phones, tablets, the web and Meta Quest. Ask your eye care professional which, if either, fits your situation.
